Roland Berger Pro bono Activity after the Great East Japan Earthquake

After the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11th, 2011, Roland Berger Tokyo assembled a Pro bono Team comprised of management staff and young employees to make the kind of social contribution which alone a consulting firm can make. While selecting an organization to support as well as debating about the concrete form this support would take, members of the team also went to the disaster area to lend a hand.

Execution of the Pro bono Project: Japan Platform (Approved Specified Nonprofit Corporation)

Japan Platform (JPF) is an authorized NPO providing efficient and quick emergency relief to disaster victims and displaced people by cooperating with and coordinating expertise and resources of NGOs (36 leading NGOs within Japan), the business community and government. http://www.japanplatform.org/top.html
Roland Berger engaged in Pro bono activity by conducting a project to support relief efforts completely free of charge.

Aiming at expanding the circle of support, Roland Berger reflected on the provided disaster relief and aided the formulation of a grand design (strategic target) for the recovery support conducted by Japan Platform.

Japan Platform's quick initial response led to 3 member NGOs providing support in 4 places one day after the earthquake, growing to 7 NGOs in 9 places within a week. Additionally, coordinating efforts took place, such as the participation of Japan Platform in the onsite office for disaster recovery, and cooperation with national and local governments to implement meetings for information exchange about the stricken areas by 4 NGOs.

At the same time, with the aim in mind to create a system to prepare for changes in the environment surrounding NGOs and provide continuous support to beneficiaries, Roland Berger aided the preparation of the first ever JPF mid-term plan and further fostered the development of Japan Platform through the membership of Principal Takashi Watanabe in its the management advisory committee.

Other Pro bono activity by Roland Berger

Within one month after the earthquake, Roland Berger provided all donations from its worldwide offices via Helping Hands. Afterwards, all further donations from around the world were given to a member NGO of Japan Platform, the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan.

These donations were presented to the Natsukashii Mirai Sozo KK founded by entrepreneurs in Rikuzentakata (Iwate Prefecture) in the form of 8 containers for the establishment of a provisional shopping area. At this point in time (February 2012), there are shops for clothing and mobile phones, contributing to reinvigorating the daily life of the local populace. Further openings of restaurants, bars, flower shops and variety stores are planned.

The event was also attended by the deputy mayor of Rikuzentakata Mr. Takashi Kubota, the president of the Natsukashii Mirai Sozo KK Mr. Mitsuru Tamura and the Tohoku representative of the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan Ms. Sayako Nogiwa.

Apart from the above donations, almost the entire staff of the Tokyo office visited the disaster area at the beginning of November 2011 and received the opportunity to think about the support to be given by themselves or the office by going out into the field with the cooperation of Japan Platform or other participating NGOs. As Roland Berger, we will continue to contribute to disaster relief.
