Restructuring

Toyo Keizai Inc.

Koichi Mizutome, Masumi Miyazaki

Following the burst of the economic bubble, the Japanese economy and many Japanese companies have found themselves at a crossroad. With technical innovation, globalization and the collapse of the main bank system, the economic environment is changing in many ways and at an increasing pace. While putting the economy on track for recovery requires large-scale structural reorganization at the corporate level, companies cannot move ahead based only on stop-gap measures, such as reducing labor and cutting costs. Making employment adjustments and abandoning certain businesses are not the same as restructuring. From the standpoint of growth strategy as the essence of restructuring, this book attempts to explain the process, including downsizing and its background and implementation-related issues, and factors for success, while providing various real-life examples. The methods introduced are based on Roland Berger's experience working on more than 900 restructuring projects in both Japan and Europe.
