Author: Principal Koji Toyama

Author: Partner Hisaji Yoneda/Principal Takashi Watanabe
The Chinese life insurance market, buoyed by the deregulatory policies of the first decade of this century, has expanded at a speed and scale far exceeding the nation’s GDP. Today, in fact, this sector can be said to have geared up to a full-fledged growth era. A closer examination of the facts, however, reveals that the Big 6 life insurers hold the lion’s share of the Chinese market, with other players stuck with far smaller pieces of the pie. Most new entries, including the foreign players, are struggling just to secure profit and get by. In this installment of Business Perspective, we study the approaches adopted by firms that have succeeded in turning their bottom lines black from comparatively early on in the Chinese life insurance market. In doing so, we hope to shed light on the optimum approaches for Japanese and other foreign life insurers to advance their business prospects in the Middle Kingdom over the years to come.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
