With the Japanese legal revisions of May 2007, it became easier for foreign companies to undertake mergers and acquisitions of Japanese businesses. However, with the traditional culture distinctive to Japanese society remaining deeply rooted in this country, it is easy for various types of problems to occur in the aftermath of such M&A. Roland Berger conducted a study to address this theme, including interviews with members of executive teams involved in corporate mergers and the integration that followed such unification. The results of this work point to the conclusion that if Japanese companies are able to digest the cultural differences during the first several months after the integration, the synergistic effects of the integration process itself will come to life. As another feature, members of the Roland Berger Tokyo Office, a unit active in the management of a large number of projects related to Japanese company M&A, defined eight key factors considered crucial for engineering successful M&A endeavors in Japan.
